Nicholas Christakis studies the subtle influence of large social networks on our lives. He came up with astonishing discoveries.
One surprising example is obesity.
Looking at the spread of obesity in large social networks, he found that there are clear clusters of obesity. In short, if your friends are fat, you are more likely to be fat. So far so good, this is understandable: you tend to go out with your friends, eat in the same places, share the same activities etc…
But what is unexpected is that the cluster extend to 3 degrees of separation! In short, your friends’ friends’ friends can make you fat!

What Motivates You

In this 10mn RSA Animation, Dan Pink explores what REALLY motivates us in the 21st Century. Studies have shown that the carrot and stick (work more – earn more) works well when it come to purely physical work. However, with anything above basic cognitive skills, the relationships between money and effort become inversely proportional. In this context, HOW do you motivate people?

The animated video below was adapted from a talk given at the RSA by Sir Ken Robinson, world-renowned education and creativity expert on changing the education paradigm. This is particularly interesting for us because what Sir Robinson really looks at is how we create our vision of the world we live in.

‘How do we educate our children to take their place in the economy of the 21st century, given that we can’t anticipate what the economy will look like at the end of next week?’ he asks.

Our current standards of education were designed and conceived and structured for a different age, driven by the economic imperatives of the industrial revolution and dominated by a certain model of the mind and the enlightenment view of intelligence, i.e a deductive ability coupled with the knowledge of the classics, i.e. what we call academic ability. We are judged against this view of the mind, and many brilliant people thin they are not. Most people have not benefited from this.
